The Den
London, United Kingdom · matchday guide
The Den is one of the most intimidating away days in the country, a steep four-stand bowl in a bleak pocket of South Bermondsey with a home crowd that lives up to its reputation. Here is how to do a matchday in SE16.
Getting there
The standard away route is a train from London Bridge to South Bermondsey, a six to eight minute hop, with a purpose-built segregated walkway running from the platform straight to the away turnstiles. Do not use Canada Water or New Cross, which take you through home areas. Policing is heavy and driving is discouraged, so the London Bridge train is the only sensible way in.
The away end
Away supporters are housed in the North Stand, typically the upper tier behind one goal. The vocal home end is the Cold Blow Lane Stand opposite, with the yellow seats spelling out THE DEN. It is steep, compact and loud, so it is a proper away day. Follow the segregated walkway and give yourself time.
Around the ground
The immediate area is post-industrial, railway sidings and warehouses, with few pubs and away fans advised not to drink locally. The sensible move is to drink around London Bridge before you head down, at places like the Barrowboy and Banker or the Shipwrights Arms. One of the most atmospheric and full-on grounds to tick off.
