Old Trafford is English football's biggest club ground, and on a full house the Stretford End still makes itself heard. Here is how to do a matchday at the Theatre of Dreams if you are heading to M16.

Getting there

Old Trafford sits southwest of Manchester city centre beside the Bridgewater Canal. The easiest approach is the Metrolink tram: the Old Trafford stop on the Altrincham line, plus Wharfside and Exchange Quay a short walk away, all run frequently on matchdays. From the city you can also walk it in around 35 to 40 minutes along the canal. Parking near the ground is limited and pre-book only, so tram or a park-and-ride from further out is the move.

The away end

Away supporters are housed in the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand, up in the corner tier, with a view down the length of the pitch. Arrive in good time: the concourses under the big stands get busy and the searches are thorough on a big game.

Around the ground

Matchday around Sir Matt Busby Way is programme sellers, food stalls and the megastore queue, with the Munich clock and the United Trinity statue worth a look before kickoff. On non-matchdays the museum and stadium tour are among the best in the country if you are ticking Old Trafford off your list.
