Anfield
Liverpool, United Kingdom · matchday guide
Few grounds do a big night like Anfield. The floodlights come on, You'll Never Walk Alone rolls down off the Kop, and the noise gets into your chest before a ball is kicked. Here is how to do a matchday at Anfield if you are heading to L4.
Getting there
Anfield sits a couple of miles north of Liverpool city centre, tucked into a grid of terraced streets. There is no station at the ground. The nearest rail stops are Sandhills and Kirkdale, each a 15 to 20 minute walk, and the Soccerbus shuttle runs from Sandhills on matchdays. Plenty of fans just walk up from town or take a bus along Walton Breck Road. Parking by the ground is residents-permit and heavily stewarded, so public transport or a park-and-walk from further out is the sensible move.
The away end
Away supporters are housed in the Anfield Road end, the goal end that has had its big redevelopment. Sightlines are good and you are behind the goal your side attacks in the second half. Turn up early: the streets funnel tight near the turnstiles and the searches are thorough.
Around the ground
Matchday on Walton Breck Road is scarves, street food and the club shop queue. The Kop end carries the history, so get in early enough to hear the anthem build rather than catching the end of it from the concourse. On non-matchdays the stadium tour and museum are worth a look if you are ticking Anfield off your grounds list.
